EDWARD A. PHELAN - Swansea

EDWARD A. PHELAN, 61, of Cliff Avenue, a former transmission specialist, died Monday at home.

He was the husband of Betty Ann (Jones) Phelan. They had been married for 43 years. Originally from Fall River, a son of the late John F. and Irene (Tardif) Phelan, he had lived in Swansea for 43 years.

Mr. Phelan had been a master transmission specialist for the J&H Electric Co., Providence, for 25 years before retiring in 2000.

He was a former member of the NRA, a former NASCAR official, and a technical inspector at the Seekonk Speedway for many years. He was a member of the Battleship Cove CB Club, the Fall River Rod and Gun Club, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, and the Massachusetts Police Association.

Besides his wife, he leaves a daughter, Kimberly L. Phelan of Bristol; a brother, John F. Phelan of Somerset; a sister, Barbara LePage of Fall River; and seven grandchildren (Amber, Adam, Sara). He was the father of the late Kathleen A. Mowry and Edward A. Phelan Jr., and brother of the late James Phelan.

The funeral will be held today at 8:45 a.m. from Hathaway Community Home for Funerals, 900 Buffinton St., Somerset, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 in Mount Carmel Church, 964 Taunton Ave., Seekonk. Burial will follow in Thomas Cemetery, Swansea.
